This course integrates mathematics content and pedagogy and is specifically designed for sudents majoring in early childhood, elementary, and/or special education (K-6), referred to as teacher candidates, focusing on effective methods of teaching mathematics to K-6 students. The mathematics content will focus on the role of units in counting, with an emphasis on composition and decomposition of number and counting/iterating units. The pedagogical focus emphasizes facilitating meaningful mathematical discourse and building procedural fluency from conceptual understanding, while students use appropriate mathematical tools strategically, attend to precision, and use repeated mathematical reasoning.
