EDU 341: Planning Mathematics Instruction that Engages All Learners

This course integrates mathematics content and pedagogy and is specifically designed for students majoring in early childhood, elementary, and/or special education, referred to as teacher candidates, focusing on effective methods of teaching mathematics to K-6 students. The mathematics content focuses on developing a conceptual understanding of operations on fractions (including decimals). The pedagogical focus emphasizes the use of appropriate manipulatives and drawings that will lead to developing procedural fluency from conceptual understanding. While planning and implementing student-centered lessons, teacher candidates will also engage with practices of establishing student learning goals, supporting students' productive struggle, and eliciting and using student thinking to guide instruction. This course requires a field placement in grades K-3.
